7-Zip
7-Zip works mainly through the Microsoft Windows OS as an open source file archiver. You can use it either in combination with a graphical user interface, or just as a command line program. A plus in its favor is that 7-Zip can even be integrated into the Windows shell environment.
Fortunately for potential 7-Zip users, 7-Zip is available for free as an open-source software which relies on the GNU LGPL license for distribution. 7-Zip can be localized for use in either of 55 different languages.
Other features of 7-Zip that you might be interested in are: plugin for the FAR Manager; strong command line version; a strong File Manager; the self-extracting functionality for the 7z format; a compression ratio for the ZIP format and GZIP format (that is considered from 2% to 10% better than the ratio available under WinZip or PKZip); compatibility with certain supported formats such as DEB (among others.)
